10:00 a.m. - Make Your Own Cane Fishing Pole Amphitheater 45 minutes
Cane pole fishing is a great way to enjoy your local parks. Since we obviously cannot remove native cane from the state park or national forest, we are making poles out of non-native golden bamboo that can be found in the St. Francis National Forest. We provide the bamboo, weights, fishing line and hook as well as instructions so you can make your very own cane pole. When you get done, you can try your pole in the Ranger pond or Bear Creek Lake. Don’t forget if you are 16 years old or older you will need a valid fishing license in order to fish. Cost is $2 per pole.

2:00 p.m. - Nature Craft Tuesday – Boats Visitor Center 1 hour
Join a park interpreter to hear about some of the different types of boats that have been used on the Mississippi River over the years. We will also discuss boater safety. Then we will make rafts out of twigs that you can float in our mini pond or at home. Cost is $1 per crafter.

9:00 a.m. – Dragonflies and Damselflies Bear Creek Lake Swim Beach 35 minutes
Do you know how fast a dragonfly can fly? Or how they catch their prey? Join a park interpreter to watch these fascinating creatures as they patrol the lake and grassy areas to find the answers to these and other questions about these bejeweled wonders. We will have loaner binoculars for you to borrow.
3:00 p.m. – Can Good Candles Visitor Center Drop-In
Today we are multi-tasking. We are going to reuse your old tin cans, mason jars, or other non-flammable container to keep them out of the landfill and create something to help keep those pesky mosquitoes away at the same time. Drop by between 3 and 4 to make a citronella candle. Bring an empty container if you have one, we will also have a few available if you don’t have any lying around your camper or home. Cost is $2 per candle.

2:00 p.m. - Nature Craft Tuesday – Insects and More Visitor Center 1 hour
Did you know all bugs are insects, but not all insects are bugs? Join a park interpreter to explore the diverse world of insects and other arthropods. Then create your own insect or arthropod from egg cartons and other craft materials. Cost is $1 per crafter. Since this is also Latino Conservation week we will have a presenter to present the program in Spanish as well as English.

Nature Journaling is a great way to remember what you have seen, increase observational skills, relax, or just be creative. It is also open to anyone of any age. Young and old alike can find journaling a great way to express themselves. Join a park interpreter to find out more about this creative pastime that is perfect for campers, hikers, fishermen and nature enthusiasts of all kinds. Cost $.50 per journal
1:00 p.m. – Culebras de Mississippi River State Park Visitor Center 45 minutes
As part of Latino Conservation week, Mississippi River State Park is presenting this program in Spanish. Snakes are a common critter found in the State Park and National Forest. Knowing a little bit about their purpose and how to stay snake aware can keep you and our native snakes safe. Park staff will cover how snakes play an essential role in keeping many of our pest populations in check. We will be sure to cover the ones you need to watch out for as well as discussing the ones that only pests need to worry about.

Como parte de la Semana de la Conservación Latina, el Mississippi River State Park presentará el programa en español. Las culebras son algunas de las criaturas que comúnmente podemos encontrar en el Bosque Nacional y en el Parque del Estado. Conocer sobre ellas y su propósito, así como estar consciente de su presencia, te puede ayudar a mantenerte seguro y a nuestras culebras nativas también. El personal del parque les demostrará cómo las culebras juegan un papel esencial manteniendo el control de plagas. También, les enseñarán con cuales especies deben tener cuidado y a cuales las plagas deben temer.

Do you ever wonder why the forest service occasionally burns the forest? What about the timber cuts we see every now and then? Or the vacant fields that seem to have been forgotten about? Join a park interpreter as we discuss some of the ways our partner agency and agencies like them help maintain healthy forests full of native plants.
