There the young lady not only gets acquainted with the East but also falls in love with an embassy employee, Henry Cadogan. However, their romance does not last long as her parents consider a young gentleman a bad company for their daughter and forbid them to marry. Desperate Henry commits suicide, failing to reconcile with the forced separation. After the tragedy, Gertrude completely devotes herself to writing and exploring the Middle East.
